“A simple moment that reminded me to look deeper at others and at myself.”

May 4, 2026

I almost didn’t bring the book.
I was getting ready for a leadership event, one I hadn’t even planned to attend. A friend had a table and offered me a seat, and I said yes.
As I packed my bag, I did what I always do… packed everything.
Notebook, pens, highlighters, snacks, lip gloss (multiple, obviously), and all the “just in case” items. And then there was the book I was currently reading.
Why would I bring a book? I wasn’t going to have time to read. I’d be listening, learning, and travelling with a friend. It didn’t make sense.
I took it out of my bag, but then… I put it back in.
And somehow, that book became part of the story.
The morning changed everything.
The session began with breakfast and a speaker I knew of.
He’s well-known. Established. The kind of person many people follow and learn from. But I had never heard him speak before. I hadn’t read his books. Leadership content hadn’t really been my focus until this past year.
Within minutes, I was locked in.
There was something about him, his humility, the way he communicated, how he made big ideas feel simple and relatable. I found myself filling page after page with notes.
By the end of the session, I was a fan.
They had given away a few of his books throughout the morning, and the invitation to have them signed was given. Then the speaker said, “If anyone brought one of my books, I’d be happy to sign it.”
And in that moment… I hesitated.
But I still went.
I walked to the front, holding the book I had brought.
Before he even said anything, I said, “I know this isn’t your book, but I would be honoured if you would sign it.”
He looked at the cover and said, “I know this author. I know this book.”
Then he opened it.
When he saw the name inside, he asked, “Is this you?”
I smiled and said, “No… It’s my daughter. She gave me the book a few years ago. She’s struggling right now.”
He paused, then looked up and said, “Okay… what’s your name?”
I told him.
And without hesitation, he wrote my name in the book and signed it so graciously.
Here I was holding a book…
Written by one person.
Recognized by another.
Signed for someone else.
Nothing about it matched what you would expect from the outside.
And yet, it became something deeply meaningful.
We do this all the time.
We look at the cover and assume we understand the story.
We do it with:
-People
-Opportunites
-Situtations
-Even ourselves
What if what's on the outside doesn’t tell the full story?
What if the value… the purpose… the breakthrough… is only revealed when we’re willing to open it?
And here’s the deeper truth…
Sometimes the “cover” you’ve been judging the most is your own.
Who you think you are…
Who you’ve believed yourself to be…
The labels, the past, the struggles…
But that’s not the full story.
So, here’s the question I want to leave you with:
What might be waiting inside you… If you stopped judging your life by what it looks like on the outside?
